The theme of workshop is “Evaluation the impact of shale gas on petrochemical industry and proposition of targeted and strategic measures for government”.

Chemistry transforms raw materials into useful products and processes that make modern life possible. Taiwan’s chemical industry relies on energy derived from natural gas not only to heat and power our facilities, but also as a raw material, or “feedstock,” to develop the thousands of products that make Taiwanese lives better, healthier, and safer. From this year, American oil companies have started to use shale gas.

America’s chemical companies use ethane, a natural gas liquid derived from shale gas, as a feedstock in numerous applications. Its relatively low price gives U.S. manufacturers an advantage over many competitors around the world that rely on naphtha, a more expensive, oil-based feedstock. Shale gas has already had a dramatic impact on US Petrochemical Industry and US energy supply. In contrast, the chemical industry in Taiwan is facing a big challenge. Our government and industry need to have a right policy to face this big challenge.

   We invite the delegates from USA, Japan and Taiwan to deliver what they have done and what they will do. This will provide important information to our government and industry to develop strategy in response to the impact of shale gas.
